Mugs

How to play mugs the drinking game.

Learn how to play Mugs, a unique coin based drinking game. This game is a twist on the classic drinking game Quarters and requires the same foundational skills of bouncing a quarter off a table and into a glass (in this case a mug). Mugs is a lot faster paced than quarters, and at times can be much more competitive and stressful. If bouncing a quarter is too difficult for members of your party try playing Slap Cup which uses a ping pong ball.

Players: 4+

Gear

  • Two coffee mugs
  • Two quarters
  • A table

Setup

Stand around the table in a circle. Give mug and quarter to two players who are standing across from each other. (not directly beside each other)

How To Play Mugs

The objective the game is similar to quarters, players must bounce the quarter of the table and into the mug. In this version players are racing against each other. Players pass the mug onto another player once they score.

Here are some additional rules that make this game a little more intense than traditional quarters.

  1. If a player gets the quarter into the mug on their first try they may pass the mug to ANYONE that DOES NOT have a mug.
  2. In the event the quarter lands in the mug any try AFTER the first attempt (second attempt or higher) they must pass the mug to their direct right.
  3. When a mug catches up to another player who already has a mug (IE they are already trying to a bounce a quarter into a mug) The new mug must be stacked on top.
  4. The player with the stacked mug now has one redemption shot to sink the now higher elevated mug. If they miss they make take a drink pass one mug to the person to their right and start again.
  5. If they get the shot they must give the stacked mugs to the person who stacked it on them. This person now gets a redemption shot. Redemption shots go back and forth until someone loses. (This part gets very intense and is easily the most fun part.)

Extra drinking rule: Each consecutive time a player gets their mug stacked on and they lose the drinks double. (example: 1 drink, 2 drinks second lose, 4 drinks third lose). The doubling continues until there losing streak is broken by someone else getting stacked on.
